Understanding your dog

Weight & body condition

A practical, respectful conversation about the individual dog, food, activity and the wider care plan.

Start with the individual.

Body condition is one part of understanding a dog’s health and movement. The conversation can include veterinary advice, feeding routines, treats, enrichment and the activities currently available to the dog. It should make room for owner circumstances without judgement.

Rehabilitation and conditioning plans need to fit any nutritional or weight-management advice already agreed with the veterinary team. Online resources can help owners organise questions and observations, but should not set a dog’s food allowance, target weight or exercise prescription.

Questions for your next conversation.

  • Who will guide our dog’s body-condition and nutrition plan?
  • How should we include treats used during rehabilitation?
  • How will movement goals fit with the advice we already have?

Approaches to discuss.

These are related areas of care to explore with the team. An individual assessment determines which, if any, are suitable for your dog.
