Understanding your dog

Elbow dysplasia

Understanding how your dog uses their body and what their diagnosis means for everyday function.

Start with the individual.

With elbow dysplasia, veterinary information is considered alongside movement, stance and the owner’s observations. The assessment conversation may explore ordinary moments such as getting up, walking on different surfaces and settling after an outing.

Rehabilitation goals should be specific to the dog and the care they are already receiving. Different assessment tools and therapies may be considered, with the purpose of each explained and the plan adjusted through review rather than assumed from the diagnosis.

Questions for your next conversation.

  • Which home observations would help your assessment?
  • What might gait or stance assessment contribute?
  • How will we decide which goals to work towards?

Approaches to discuss.

These are related areas of care to explore with the team. An individual assessment determines which, if any, are suitable for your dog.
