Gait analysis: what are we looking at?

Watching movement is the beginning of a conversation about how a dog moves in a particular setting.

Gait analysis focuses on movement, but the reason for assessing it should still be individual. Ask which question the team is exploring and how they will bring together what they observe with the information already available about your dog.

If recordings or measurements are used, ask for the explanation as well as the result. Understanding what can be said from an assessment, and what still needs discussion, helps put the information into perspective.

Bring this into the conversation

  • Which movement question are we exploring?
  • How will the findings be explained?
  • What else helps put them in context?
